Slavery is when a person is owned by others, who tells the slaves where they live and what they do. Slavery is when someone need to follow orders and they are treated badly. The ancient Greeks and the Romans had slaves too (The Abolition Project). Slavery came to North America in 1619 (Slavery in America).
Slaves were brought from Africa, mostly west Africa. They came to the United States on ships. During the trip lots died of disease and starvation. The first slaves on a ship went to Jamestown. Some home slaves cooked and cleaned and some slaves helped with farming.
In the North of the United States slaves were illegal. The North had more people than the South. The North did not have many big farms. At the North they had immigrant labor to do the work in factories.
In the South they wanted slaves. The South had lots of big farms. So they needed slaves (The Ducksters). They had big farms so they could make money from tobacco and other crops (Slavery in America).
In the South a system for slaves to escape was called The Underground Railroad. The slaves would try to get to The Underground Railroad to get to the North. There would be people taking care of the escaped slaves. If they found slaves they would bring the slaves back. When Abraham Lincoln became President, the South was scared that slavery would end. So the South became a country called The Confederacy. That’s when The Civil War started. When The Civil War ended, the North won and slavery ended. The South join the North again (The Ducksters).
